FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:Today, during a press conference in Mobile, AL, the Alabama Music Hall of Fame announced the award winners and inductees for it's Tenth Induction Banquet and Awards Show, to be held on January 25, 2003, at the Mobile Convention Center in Mobile, Al. David Johnson, Executive Director of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame said, "We are very pleased and excited to return to the City of Mobile for our Tenth Induction Banquet and Awards Show. As before, this award-winning event will be an outstanding evening of recognition for this state's unequaled music heritage and notable music achievers. Patrons in attendance will be entertained and rub elbows with some of the most successful and talented Alabamians in the music industry and will see, first hand, that stars do fall on Alabama." Director Johnson thanked Mayor Dow for his steadfast commitment in having this event in the City of Mobile once again, stating that Dow recognized the historical importance, as well as the monetary value, for the city of Mobile to host this stellar event. Johnson then announced the 2003 contemporary award winners and the four recipients for Induction into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame: "The Music Industry Award" goes to Florence, AL native, Alan Schulman. Alan has had tremendous success as a producer and recording engineer with such artist as Alabama, Garth Brooks, Jimmy Buffett, Shenandoah, Travis Tritt and Chris Ledoux. "The Music Creator's Award" goes to Muscle Shoals, AL native and hit songwriter Steven Dale Jones. Steven's repertoire of over 100 songs recorded includes the award winning hit song "One More Day" recorded by Diamond Rio, "Ten Thousand Angels" for Mindy McCready and "She Wants to Be Wanted" for Ty Herndon. "The Musicians Awards" goes to two very successful and talented Alabamians. Studio Drummer and Decatur AL native, Milton Sledge and Studio Bass Player and Athens, AL, native Mike Chapman. They both have very distinctive music carriers as "A Team" players in Nashville. Their work can be heard on such artist recordings as the Group Alabama, Garth Brooks, Tracy Lawrence, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly Parton, George Jones and Leann Rimes to name a very few. "The America Music Award" goes to Geraldine, AL native Pat Upton. Pat's male tenor voice became instantly recognizable in 1969 when he topped the charts as the lead singer of the group "The Spiral Starecase" with his self penned and million-air award winning classic"(I Love You) More Today Than Yesterday". "The Media Award" goes to Birmingham, AL native, Joe Rumore. If you listened to radio in Alabama in the 60's and 70's you no doubt heard Joe Rumore. A legend in Birmingham & Central Alabama, Joe was on the air from his basement home studio every morning and afternoon on "The Mighty 690" WVOK. Having your record played on Joe's show was as good as it got. The "Governor's Achievement Awards" given by the Governor's office go to: Daphne, AL group 4HIM. A Gold-selling, multi-Dove award winning and Grammy nominated super-group in Christian Music. Mobile, AL native and hit recording artist, Allison Morrer. Her first hit recording, which she also co-wrote, "A Soft Place To Fall" appeared in Robert Redford's Oscar-nominated film, The Horse Whisper. Lexington, AL native, Recording Studio Owner, Music Publisher and Producer, Woody Richardson. The four-music icon's to receive Induction into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame for their lifework in the music field are: Clarence Carter - Born in Montgomery, AL - Has had hits in four decades, through the 1960's 70's, 80's and 90s. Including Looking For A Fox, Slip Away, Too Weak To Fight, Patches and Strokin'. Eddie Floyd - Born in Montgomery, AL - Started his carrier in 1955 in a Detroit, MI group The Falcons. They had five chart records. He went on his own in 1965 and from 1966-1970, wrote and recorded 12 hit songs in the top 100, including his signature song, Knock On Wood. EmmyLou Harris - Born in Birmingham, AL - For over 20 years, Emmylou has gained success with her exquisite vocal style in the music genres of pop, folk, country and alternative. She has released 25 albums, eight that reached Gold status. She has won numerous awards, including four Grammy awards for Best Country Vocal Performance. Mack Vickery- Born in Town Creek, AL - One of the few elite Songwriters that has penned hit songs in five decades. Writing hits for such artists as, Hank Williams, Jr., Waylon Jennings, Lefty Frizzell, Faron Young, Tanya Tucker, Johnny Paycheck, John Anderson, and George Strait to name a few. James Reese Europe- Born in Mobile, AL- Very likely the individual most responsible for making the new music and the term jazz widely acceptable both in America and Western Europe. He was an acknowledged leader in African-American musical theater, both as a conductor and as a prolific composer. He broke the color barrier against black orchestras playing in first class theaters for white artists.
