The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is considered one of the
finest studio rhythm sections in the world. Composed of Jimmy
Johnson, guitar, Roger Hawkins, drums, David Hood, bass, and
Barry Beckett, keyboards, the Rhythm Section was formed in 1967,
playing sessions in New York, Nashville, and Muscle Shoals.

In 1969 they set up their own recording studio, calling it
Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. They were the first rhythm section
in the U.S. to have the unique concept of owning their own
recording studio, as well as publishing and production companies.

They became world renown as the musicians, and or producers, on
such classics as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "Mustang Sally"
by Wilson Pickett, "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon, "I'll Take You
There" by The Staple Singers, "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob
Seger, and many others. They have played on over 500 LPs,
garnering over 75 gold and platinum LPs and continue to turn out
hit recordings each year.

The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section is the 1995 Lifework Award for
Non-Performing Achievement recipients.

Beginning as members of the Fame Recording Studio rhythm section, the four members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section formed Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in 1969, and became world renown as the musicians on classics such as "Respect" by Aretha Franklin, "Mustang Sally" by Wilson Pickett, "High Time We Went" by Joe Cocker, "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon, "Tightrope" by Leon Russell, "Tonight's The Night" by Rod Stewart, "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger, and many others. The members of the Rhythm Section, Jimmy Johnson, guitar, Roger Hawkins, drums, David Hood, bass, and Barry Beckett, keyboards, developed new facilities in 1978 when their efforts outgrew the original location, and a new state of the art, two-studio complex was opened on the banks of the Tennessee River. Once in the new studio, the members continued to branch into the realm of production and launching their own record label in conjunction with Capitol Records, MSS-Capitol. The label signed a variety of artists including Delbert McClinton, Frankie Miller, Russell Smith, Levon Helm and Lenny LeBlanc. In 1985, the rhythm section sold the studio to MALACO Records of Jackson, MS. Since that time they have continued to work on individual projects.
