Rachel Mathes, noted soprano with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She studied under Andrew Gainey at Birmingham Southern College and in 1962 received a Fulbright Scholarship for work at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
Mathes continued her studies in Duesseldorf, Germany. She made her professional debut in 1965 in Basel, Switzerland, as Aida. Since then she has received rave reviews world-wide from patrons as well as critics.
Mathes returned to Birmingham in 1977 where she is an adjunct professor of music and faculty artist at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She also serves as faculty advisor for the high school level organization T.O.P. (Teaching Outstanding Performers).
