J .R. Cobb is a guitar player and songwriter and a member of the Atlanta Rhythm Section.
Former sessionmen, The Atlanta Rhythm Section smoothed out Southern rock's rough edges with studio sophistication. Cobb, Dean Daughtry, and producer-manager Buddy Buie had been members of the Classic IV, whose hits included "Spooky", "Stormy", and "Traces".
They met the other Section members while working together on a Roy Orbison session in !970. Soon after, they formed the group, with mentor Bill Lowery giving them their name. Ronnie Justo, lead vocalist for their debut LP, was soon replaced by Ronnie Hammond, a former recording engineer.
Frequent touring helped establish them as a major group in the late '70s. Their hit singles included "So In To You', (#7, 1977), "Imaginary Lover", (#7, 1978), and "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight", (#14, 1978). Other singles included "Champagne Jam" and "Doraville." Their Album "A Rock and Roll Alternative" has been certified gold; "Champagne Jam" Platinum.
Their current lineup includes singer Andy Anderson, who joined the group in 1983. The Greenville, South Carolina, native spent five years singing backup with Billy Joe Royal in the late '70s.
