HANK BALLARD - Bessemer, Alabama

In 1958, Ballard wrote "The Twist"
By the middle of 1960, Ballard and the Midnighters had three simultaneous hits in the pop top 40: "Finger Poppin' Time", "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go", and their original version of "The Twist."
In 1990, Ballard was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

BAMA STATE COLLEGIANS - Montgomery, Alabama

Jazz band for Alabama State College a predominantly black institution of higher education.
Some of the alumni were Amos Gordon, J.L. Lowe, Erskine Hawkins, Haywood Henry, Dud Bascomb, J.B. Simms, Wilbur Hollins, Jimmy Mitchell, Richard Sanford, Joseph Sanford, among others.
The band director of the Collegians during the 1930's was Mr. William Lawrence James.
With a nucleus of Birmingham musicians, the band program grew and gained a reputation as one of, if not the best, college bands of the era attracting students from all over the country.

BOYD BENNETT- Muscle Shoals, Alabama

Co-wrote & recorded Top 5 rock 'n roll hit "Seventeen" in 1955 and "My Boy Flat Top"
Seventeen rose to No. 5 on the Pop charts and provided King Records with one of its all-time best-sellers. A number of established Pop artists quickly covered the number ultimately pushing writer-sale royalties to some 3 million.
The songs, "Seventeen" and "My Boy Flat Top" were the first songs ever recorded for the teenage market. The original manuscript of "Seventeen" is on display in the Library of Congress, in Washington, DC.
Boyd's band also backed Moon Mullican on the 1956 session which produced his Rockabilly classic Seven Nights to Rock.

JO JO BENSON - Phenix City, Alabama

In 1968 he formed a duo with 17-year-old, Peggy Scott
"Lover's Holiday" was their first recording together and went gold. In less than two years they would add two more gold singles "Pickin' Wild Mountain Berries" and "Soulshake."
In 1999 he recorded an album of spirited traditional soul that he called "Reminiscing in the Jam Zone." This collection of soul and rhythm and blues standards has been placed "among the finest soul albums of the year - indeed, of the decade" by Living Blues magazine.

Scott has performed with legendary jazz organist Richard "Groove" Holmes, Eddie Kendrick, The Temptations, Anita Baker, The Chi-Lites, Candi Staton, Steve Fisher of Van Morrison, and Wynton Marsalis.
The jingle for Southeastern Meats, one of hundreds of commercial jingles written, played and produced by Scott over the years, has now run for almost 20 years, making it among the longest-running in Alabama commercial history.
Scott is a professor of music at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
