Barnes' songwritting career took off in late 1989 when Hank Williams, Jr. released Tommy's song, "Man To Man." The single would only go to number 62 on the charts but it set the stage for successes in the 1990s. In addition to Hank Williams, Jr., Tommy has had singles released by Don Cox, Tom Wopat, Little Texas, and Tim McGraw. "My Love" by Little Texas was a Gold single. The music video received CMT Country Video of the Year. Tim McGraw's "Indian Outlaw" went Platinum as a single. Both songs received awards as the most performed songs of 1994.
